Is 65 Polyester 35 Cotton Waterproof?

Many customers often ask, “Is 65 polyester 35 cotton waterproof?” The simple answer is that 65% polyester 35% cotton fabric is not inherently waterproof, but it does offer some natural resistance to moisture compared to pure cotton. This fabric blend combines the strength and water-resistant characteristics of polyester with the softness and breathability of cotton. While polyester fibers are hydrophobic and naturally repel water to some extent, the cotton fibers are absorbent. As a result, T/C 65/35 fabric can resist light moisture or splashes for a short time but is not fully waterproof in its untreated form.

However, this blend is highly versatile and can be made water-resistant or waterproof with special surface treatments. For example, adding a WR (water-repellent) finish to the fabric surface creates a protective layer that causes water to bead up and roll off rather than soak in. This type of treated fabric is commonly used in workwear, uniforms, and outdoor apparel that require both durability and some level of water protection.

For applications demanding true waterproof performance, such as rainwear or heavy-duty outdoor gear, additional lamination or coating technologies are applied. These include PU (polyurethane) coating or PVC backing, which completely block water penetration while maintaining the fabric’s strength and flexibility.

The advantage of 65 polyester 35 cotton fabric lies in its balance. It offers better wrinkle resistance, durability, and quick-drying properties than pure cotton while remaining comfortable and breathable. It is widely used in work uniforms, trousers, jackets, school uniforms, medical scrubs, and home textiles, especially when a balance of comfort and performance is needed.

In summary, while standard T/C 65/35 fabric is not waterproof by itself, it can be easily upgraded with water-repellent or waterproof finishes to meet specific functional needs. This makes it a highly adaptable fabric solution for both everyday wear and specialized garments. Whether you need basic durability or enhanced weather protection, 65 polyester 35 cotton fabric offers the flexibility to deliver exactly what your application requires.
