How to Tell If It’s 100% Linen

Identifying whether a fabric is truly 100% linen involves checking its texture, appearance, and physical properties, as well as performing simple tests.

Look at the Texture:
100% linen has a distinct natural texture with slight irregularities in the weave, often showing slubs—tiny thick or thin threads that give linen its organic, slightly rustic look. Unlike smooth synthetic fabrics or cotton, linen feels crisp and textured to the touch.

Check the Drape:
Linen tends to have a structured but relaxed drape, offering a natural stiffness compared to softer fabrics like cotton or rayon. It holds its shape well but still moves fluidly.

Test the Wrinkle Factor:
Linen wrinkles easily due to its natural fiber properties. Scrunch the fabric in your hand; if it creases immediately and noticeably, it is likely to be pure linen. Blended fabrics or synthetics are more resistant to wrinkles.

Feel the Fabric:
Linen feels cool, crisp, and breathable. It gets softer with each wash but always retains a slightly coarse natural texture compared to cotton, which feels smoother.

Look at the Shine:
Linen typically has a matte finish with a subtle natural luster, different from the glossy sheen of synthetic fibers like polyester or rayon.

Burn Test (For Experts):
Carefully burn a small hidden thread (only if safe to do). Linen burns like paper (plant-based), producing light gray ash and smells like burning grass. Synthetic fibers melt and form hard beads.

Check the Label and Certifications:
Reliable suppliers label their fabrics accurately. Look for certifications like OEKO-TEX, European Flax, vel Masters of Linen, which ensure authenticity.
